Demand-Based Control Planes for Switching Fabrics White Paper

Overlays are a key enabler of the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) model of control and data plane separation for network abstraction and programmability. Locator Identity Separation Protocol (LISP) as a control plane for overlays is particularly well suited to accommodate the logical centralization of the control plane for programmability. The virtual network overlay uses a control plane to keep the mapping of endpoints to their network location up to date as endpoints move around the network. This control plane must be scalable, nimble, and extensible in handling the endpoint-to-location mappings. It is not, however, required to handle the path calculations that traditional routing protocols must handle. The path calculations required to transport traffic between locations over a multipathed network are executed by the control plane of the underlying network and are therefore abstracted from the overlay control plane.

Repackable Multi-plane Banyan-Type Optical Switching Fabrics

The multi-plane banyan-type switching fabric is a very promising architecture for building nonblocking optical switches. To avoid blocking states many copies of planes, i.e. log2N switching fabrics are connected in parallel, so we call this structure multi-plane. In this paper, repackably nonblocking multi-plane banyan-type switching fabrics are considered. Two repacking algorithms for multi-pl...

Reducing cell loss in banyan based ATM switching fabrics

In this paper, we propose a new technique for reducing cell loss in multi-banyan based ATM switching fabrics. We propose a switch architecture that uses incremental path reservation based on previously established connections. Path reservation is carried out sequentially within each banyan but multiple banyan planes can be concurrently reserved. We use a conflict resolution approach according t...

The Dependency of Colorimetric Characteristics of Black Fabrics to the Whiteness Attribute of Substrate

In this paper the effect of whiteness attribute of white substrates on blackness property of black coated fabrics is investigated. To this aim, four cotton fabrics with different whiteness and tint attributes are used as white substrates. To prepare a set of black samples, various concentrations of four color pigments, i.e., red, green, blue and yellow, were mixed with the black one and applied...

Topologies and routing in Gigabit switching fabrics

The ever increasing demand for bandwidth in computer networking has seen an evolution from the 3 Mbps Ethernet of 1976 to 1 Gbps Ethernet today with 10 Gbps available soon. This evolution in bandwidth has presented the network vendors with an increasing range of challenges when producing high capacity switches with a large number of ports. In this paper we study three different scalable topolog...

A Localized Congestion Control Mechanism for PCI Express Advanced Switching Fabrics

Even though there is a commonality in their physical and link layers, Advanced Switching (AS) is more than merely an extension of PCI Express. The role of PCI Express is primarily as a chip-interconnect. In contrast, AS functions as a true system fabric interconnect encompassing domains that are vastly different and indeed more sophisticated than that of PCI Express’. In such a setup, congestio...
